APZ Tone Tomšic - Curriculum
APZ Tone TomšicAPZ Tone Tomšic unites students from all Departments of the University of Ljubljana which share a great love of singing and an unceasing wish to perform at the highest artistic level. The choir continues the tradition of the Academic choir of the University of Ljubljana founded in 1926 by France Marolt and consisted of male singers only. In years 1938-40 Marolt also conducted the Female Academic choir. After the cultural silence held during the Second World War, the choir began its activity again, this time as a mixed choir under a new name, Akademski pevski zbor Tone Tomšic. The choir has always been led by recognized conductors: France Marolt, Radovan Gobec, Janez Bole, Lojze Lebic, Igor Lavric, Marko Munih, Jože Fürst, Jernej Habjanic and Stojan Kuret. Since 2002, it is led by conductor Urša Lah. Since its beginnings APZ Tone Tomšic has been one of those directing Slovenian choral singing, not only as far as its performance and technique are concerned but also because of its choice of programme. The choir’s repertoire includes works from all musical periods, while special attention is given to modern choral music. APZ with its commissions and competitions encourages both young and already acknowledged Slovenian composers to create new pieces and with first performances of their works furthers the recognition of Slovenian choral music at home and abroad. The choir performs all over Slovenia, participates in vocal-instrumental projects (C. Orff: Carmina Burana, G. Verdi: Requiem), records pieces for Slovenian National Radio (RTV Slovenija) archives and collaborates with Danish conductor Peter Hanke on seminars, concerts and festivals. Choir confirms its quality with successful performances at many festivals and competitions both in Slovenia and abroad. APZ Tone Tomšic’s greatest international achievements are its victories at prestiques competitions such as C.A. Seghizzi 1963 with conductor Lojze Lebic; 1965 and 1967 with conductor Marko Munih; 1980 with conductor Jože Fürst and at The Grand Prix competitions (Tours: 1980 with conductor Jože Fürst, 1984 with conductor Jernej Habjanic and in 1999 with conductor Stojan Kuret; Seghizzi: 2001 with conductor Stojan Kuret; Varna: 2001 with conductor Stojan Kuret) and First Prize at the competition Grand Prix of Europe in 2002, in Arezzo with conductor Stojan Kuret. Under the leadership of Urša Lah, the choir has achieved the following successes: The First Prize at the International Choral Festival in Tampere, Finland in 2003, in July 2004 the choir won two First Prizes in the category of mixed and female choirs in Cantonigros, Spain. In 2005 choir won The Golden Award and The First Place at Slovenian National Choral Competition NAŠA PESEM, and The First Place in category Polifonia/programma monografico at International Choral Competition C.A. Seghizzi in Italy and was a finalist on the International choral competition of the European Broadcasting Union LET THE PEOPLES SING 2005 in Köln in the organisation of WRD (D). In April 2006 was a finalist in Grand Prix of 8th International Choral Competiton Maribor and achieved 4th Place.
